The Background of Miko's Place

Our "WHY"

Miko’s Place is named in honor of our founder’s mother, Miko. As the third child in her family, she was born into a culture during a time when women were often undervalued compared to men. Disappointed that she was not a son, her father gave her a name that meant "third daughter." In contrast, her sisters were given names with beautiful meanings like "bright child" and "kindness and grace." This simple act left Miko feeling shamed simply for being a woman.

Her struggles only deepened in adulthood, as she endured nearly 40 years in a relationship marked by physical, mental, and verbal abuse. Yet, despite the pain, her resilience and spirit remain an inspiration.

The name Miko also has a deeper meaning. It means “shrine maiden,” which refers to those who serve in Shinto temples, offering guidance and support to visitors seeking help.

At Miko’s Place, we aspire to be a sanctuary & safe haven for individuals facing domestic violence. Our mission is to guide and empower victims, helping them transform into those who not only survive...but thrive.
